Pressure Tolerance

Definition
Pressure tolerance describes how a performer's output holds up as perceived stakes increase, and the relationship is not linear. Hardy's (1990) catastrophe model of anxiety and performance argues that cognitive anxiety and physiological arousal interact multiplicatively rather than additively: at low cognitive anxiety, rising arousal produces the familiar gentle inverted-U curve, but at high cognitive anxiety, the same rise in arousal can trigger a sudden, catastrophic collapse in performance past a threshold, not a gradual decline. That distinction matters because it means pressure tolerance is not simply about staying calm on average, it is about how a performer's system behaves once a critical threshold of stakes and self-doubt is crossed.

In gaming
- Holding a normal crosshair-placement routine on match point in a tournament final versus during a routine scrim rep of the identical mechanical task.
- A jungler making the same gank-timing read in a ranked promotion game that they make automatically in a normal-stakes match, only slower and with more second-guessing.
- The gap between a player's practice-mode accuracy and their accuracy in a broadcast match against the same opponent skill level.
Relevance
NeuroRank does not manipulate real competitive stakes, a combine session carries no tournament consequence, but the Tilt module's failure phase and the Composure module's distraction phase both simulate the internal signature of rising pressure: a forced disruption to processing follows a baseline, and how much the player's RT and accuracy degrade (and how fast they recover) is scored directly as Tilt Recovery and Composure.
