Choking (Under Pressure)

Definition
Choking is a paradox: it targets the skills a performer knows best, not the ones they are least practiced at. Baumeister (1984) proposed explicit monitoring theory to explain why: under pressure, self-consciousness rises, and performers respond by consciously attending to the mechanics of a task that is normally executed automatically, below the level of deliberate awareness. That conscious monitoring interrupts the smooth, proceduralized execution of the skill, degrading performance precisely because the performer is trying harder to get it right. Novice performers, whose skills are not yet automatic, do not show the same effect and can sometimes improve slightly under the same pressure, since conscious monitoring is how they were already executing the task.

Relevance
The Tilt module's structure, a clean baseline phase followed by a simulated failure phase, is built to expose exactly this kind of pressure-triggered breakdown: a drop in accuracy or RT that appears specifically after the pressure event rather than gradually, distinguishing a choke-shaped dip from ordinary fatigue. The Composure module's flanker interference phase captures a related but distinct signature, degradation from distraction rather than from self-focused monitoring.
