Composure

Definition
Composure, in a cognitive-performance sense, refers to the ability to maintain accurate and efficient information processing when distracting or threatening information is present alongside the task-relevant signal. Eysenck, Derakshan, Santos, and Calvo (2007) formalized this in attentional control theory, arguing that anxiety and pressure primarily damage the attentional control system's ability to inhibit distractor processing and shift flexibly between tasks, which is why performance under pressure often degrades in efficiency, more effort for the same result, well before it degrades in raw accuracy. Under this model, composure is trainable and measurable through interference tasks, not a fixed personality trait.

NeuroRank's Composure module directly operationalizes attentional control theory using a flanker paradigm: a compatible-flanker baseline phase establishes clean performance, and an incompatible-flanker distraction phase measures how much RT and accuracy degrade when distractors compete for attention. The Composure dimension score is derived from the size of that degradation, smaller interference meaning stronger composure.
