Metacognition

Definition
Metacognition is the awareness and regulation of one's own cognitive processes, not just thinking, but monitoring and controlling that thinking while it happens. Flavell (1979) introduced the term and split it into two components: metacognitive knowledge, what a person understands about their own cognitive abilities and the demands of a given task, and metacognitive regulation, the active monitoring and adjustment of an ongoing cognitive process as it unfolds. The distinction matters because the two can come apart: a player can hold accurate knowledge about a known weakness in the abstract while still failing to regulate against it in the moment, which is where most practical metacognitive failure actually happens.
