Cognitive Flexibility

Definition
Cognitive flexibility is the ability to shift perspective, strategy, or response rules when a situation demands it, rather than persisting with a plan that has stopped fitting the moment. Diamond's (2013) influential review of executive function places cognitive flexibility as the third of three core executive functions, built on top of the other two: it requires holding a rule in working memory and inhibiting the pull of the previous rule before the new one can be applied cleanly. Flexibility deficits show up as perseveration, continuing an old strategy past the point it stopped working, a pattern that is easy to spot in competitive play when a player keeps running a read the opponent has clearly adjusted to.

In gaming
- Abandoning a planned aggressive entry the instant new information (a sound cue, a rotation) makes the read stale, without needing to consciously talk yourself out of the old plan.

Relevance
