Simple Reaction Time vs. Choice Reaction Time
Simple reaction time (SRT) is how fast you respond to a single expected stimulus. Choice reaction time (CRT) is how fast you respond when you first have to identify what appeared and pick the correct action. Almost every duel that decides an Ascendant-tier round is a choice RT event: an opponent peeks a corner, you have to register whether it is a real threat, and only then does the click happen.
Players who train pure flick reaction drills and see no rank movement are often training the wrong dimension. SRT gains rarely translate one-to-one into duel-winning CRT gains, because the identification step, not the motor response, is usually the bottleneck holding Ascendant players below Immortal.
Where Ascendant Players Realistically Land
The figures below are NeuroRank's current percentile benchmarks across the full tested player population, not measured rank-specific cohort data:
- 99th percentile: ≤ 154 ms
- 95th percentile: ≤ 182 ms
- 90th percentile: ≤ 201 ms
- 50th percentile (median): ≤ 238 ms
- 25th percentile: ≤ 261 ms
For choice reaction time, the distribution looks like this. Unlike the simple RT figures above, these choice RT thresholds are v1 literature estimates and have not yet been calibrated against live NeuroRank session data:

- 95th percentile: ≤ 255 ms
- 90th percentile: ≤ 278 ms
- 50th percentile (median): ≤ 378 ms
- 25th percentile: ≤ 447 ms
Ascendant does not demand top-1% raw speed. A player sitting at the median on both SRT and CRT can climb through Ascendant on decision quality and positioning alone. What separates a player who is stuck from one who is not is usually not the average number, it is how often that number spikes under load.
Consistency Is the Hidden Separator
NeuroRank measures reaction consistency as a coefficient of variation (CV), the standard deviation of your response times divided by the mean. Pooling simple and choice RT trials into one consistency score inflates the raw CV number compared to single-task consistency metrics you may have seen elsewhere, but the pooled measure is comparable across every NeuroRank player because the test composition is fixed.
- 99th percentile consistency: CV ≤ 17.7%
- 95th percentile consistency: CV ≤ 26.4%
- 90th percentile consistency: CV ≤ 37.2%
- 50th percentile (median): CV ≤ 45.0%
A rising CV means your reaction time is drifting further from its own average from trial to trial, exactly the pattern that shows up when tilt or fatigue creeps in over a long Ascendant-tier session where matches routinely run 30-plus rounds.
Why Composure Matters as Much as Speed
NeuroRank's composure score blends accuracy retention and speed retention under a distraction condition, on a 0 to 120 scale. The 90th-percentile composure score currently sits at 106, meaning the top 10% of tested players hold their baseline performance almost fully intact when pressure is introduced. The median score is 94.5. Late-round Ascendant duels, where a stray flash or a teammate call breaks your focus mid-peek, are exactly the scenario this dimension is built to measure.
What You Can Actually Improve
Raw simple reaction time has a genetic floor around 100 to 120 ms that is not meaningfully trainable. What is trainable:
- Choice RT latency , improves with repeated stimulus-identification reps against varied peek angles
- Consistency (CV reduction) , improves with sleep quality and a fixed pre-session warm-up routine
- Composure under load , improves with deliberate pressure training and tilt recovery drills
Testing which of these is your actual limiter, rather than guessing from vibes after a losing session, is the fastest way to stop training the wrong thing.
