Definition
Pattern recognition is the process of matching what is currently being perceived against structure already stored in memory from prior experience. Chase and Simon's (1973) classic chess study demonstrated this directly: chess masters could reproduce a briefly-shown, realistic mid-game board position far more accurately than novice players, but that advantage disappeared almost entirely when the same pieces were arranged randomly. The masters were not seeing more of the board, they were recognizing familiar chunks of structure within it and encoding those chunks as single units rather than dozens of individual piece positions, a mechanism now central to how expertise research explains rapid, accurate perception under time pressure.

In gaming
- Reading a common rotation or gank pattern off a two-second minimap glance, the way a chess master reads a familiar board shape.
- Recognizing a wallbang or smoke-lineup angle from an audio cue alone, before any visual confirmation.
- Anticipating the next beat of a repeating attack or dodge pattern after only a cycle or two of exposure.
Relevance
NeuroRank does not isolate expertise-driven chunking the way a domain-specific study would, but two modules draw on adjacent skills: the Tracking module's Lissajous-curve target requires anticipating a repeating spatial pattern to maintain time-on-target, and the Memory module's grid recall task requires encoding a spatial configuration accurately enough to reproduce it, both partial windows into the same pattern-encoding machinery.
