Definition
Flicker detection concerns the visual system's sensitivity to brief, intermittent, or low-contrast changes in a stimulus, often studied through the critical flicker fusion (CFF) threshold, the frequency at which an intermittent light is perceived as continuous rather than flickering. De Lange (1958) characterized how the CFF threshold varies with luminance and stimulus size, establishing that flicker sensitivity is not a fixed property of the eye but scales with the temporal dynamics of the underlying visual channels.
