Dual N-Back

Definition
The dual n-back task is a working-memory paradigm that presents two independent streams of information at once, typically a visual grid position and a spoken letter, and requires the participant to continuously judge whether the current item in each stream matches the one presented n steps earlier. Jaeggi and colleagues (2008) used dual n-back training to report transfer to fluid-intelligence test scores, a claim that ignited a still-unresolved debate in cognitive science over whether working-memory training generalizes to broader reasoning ability or only improves performance on tasks that closely resemble the trained task itself. Whatever the transfer question's final answer, the task remains one of the most demanding standard measures of working-memory updating under interference, because both streams must be held and continuously refreshed at the same time.

Relevance
NeuroRank's Memory module and dual n-back both load on working-memory updating, but they are not the same test: the platform's grid-recall task is a single stream held and recalled after a delay, while dual n-back demands continuous, simultaneous updating across two independent streams under constant interference. The Working Memory dimension score should be read as a related but narrower measurement than what a dedicated dual n-back task would produce.
